We challenged you all to step up and help us in the fight against hunger and you have: to date we have received donations totaling over 500 food items and have forgiven over $400 in late fines- and we're only a week and a half in. At this rate, I think we can forget about our original goal of 1,000 food items and instead shoot for 1,500 donated food items. People in the community have quite generous in their giving as food items donated are outnumbering late fines (given the incentive, it could be the other way around). We're grateful for your support everyday.

Library News
We are on our way to 1,000 donated items: just in our first two days we collected over 100 items and forgave over $150 in fines. Help us reach our weekly goal of 250 donated items by stopping in today, Saturday or Sunday. We accept non-fine related donations as well as monetary donations (a $1 donation can serve 3 meals for someone in need). Happy Thanksgiving!
The Job Seekers Labs for Wednesday night and Friday afternoon are cancelled, as the library will be closed at these times for the Thanksgiving holiday. The library will reopen Saturday morning with public computers available for anyone needing computer access to work on a resume, search for jobs, or file for unemployment (or do anything else, really) and the JSL will return Tuesday morning. Happy holidays!
What's in your future? Ask the tea leaves. Learn about the Victorian art of tea leaf reading from a Detroit Historical Society Guild member. Teens ages 12+ are welcome, as well as adults. Please bring a white, round bottom tea cup and saucer; the rest is provided! Space is limited, so please reserve your spot by calling (734) 326-6123 or visiting the Reference Desk.
Teen Book Club (recommended for grades 10-12) meets the last Thursday of each month at 7pm. At this month's meeting, we're discussing It's Kind of a Funny Story by Ned Vizzini. Books are made available for book club members at the Reference Desk prior to the meeting. No sign up is required, just reading in advance!
The next meeting is at 7pm on Tuesday, Nov. 23rd, due to the holiday. The club will meet again on January 27th.
Attention all teens! Do you like reading manga or watching anime? Then you should join the Westland Library's Anime/Manga Discussion Group for grades 7-12. No sign up is required. Mangas for group discussion are kept at the Reference Desk prior to the meeting.
The group meets the third Wednesday of every month at 7pm, and the next meeting is Wednesday, Dec. 15th. Questions? Call (734) 326-6123.
The Westland Public Library is happy to announce we will be hosting a Food for Fines program from November 22nd until December 23rd. Anybody who has fines at the library will be able to bring in a non-perishable, unexpired good to pay for $2 worth of fines (up to $20 in fines total). This will not cover lost or damaged items, but can cover fines on those items.
Our goal is to collect 1000 goods over the course of the month. Non-fine related donations will be accepted, too. We will keep you posted here and in the library on our progress. All donated food will be collected by Gleaners Community Food Bank and distributed to various food agencies in the Westland area. To see a list of eligible food and non-food items, please stop by any of our service desks or call (734) 326-6123.
Please stop by the Circulation Desk starting Monday, November 22nd to get your past fines reduced- and feel good doing something kind for your community!
The library will be closing at 5 pm on Wednesday, November 24 for the start of the Thanksgiving holiday. We will be closed all day Thursday, November 25 and Friday, November 26.
We will re-open at 9 am on Saturday, November 27.
Do you know an adult who is having trouble reading? We are starting a literacy program here at the Westland Public Library and we will connect you with a trained tutor who can help. Come speak to Kristy at the Reference desk for more information.
Did you know that you can get 1-on-1 computer training at the library? Get help setting up email, using Microsoft Office products and more. See what topics are available. Sign up at the Reference desk today!
