Food for Fines: ending numbers

Our Food for Fines program concluded on Saturday, March 31. We are happy to announce that although we did not reach our goals we were able to raise over 1500 food and bath items and forgive almost $1900 in fines. Thank you so much to everyone who participated- we're delighted that all of this will be distributed by Gleaners Community Food Bank throughout Southeastern Michigan to families and kids in need. Pat yourself on the back, Westland, for a deed well done!

World Book Night Reception

April 16, 6:30-8pm,Meeting Room B

World Book Night (WBN) is a celebration of reading and books and tens of thousands of people will spread the joy and love of reading by giving out free books on April 23 across the country. World Book Day began in the UK and has spread to Ireland, Germany, and now, in 2012, the U.S., so it is exciting to have the Public Library of Westland chosen as a distribution point.

The public  is invited to stop by for some light refreshments and find out how to be involved in future World Book Night book giveaways. Please check out the WBN website to find out more information and how you can receive information on how to be a book giver next year! http://www.us.worldbooknight.org/

Food for Fines: We need your help!

Food for Fines is nearly two weeks old and we are coming up short of our goals for the program. So far, we have received over 350 food or bath items and forgiven almost $500 in fines. Our goals for the month of March are 2,000 food items collected and over $3,000 fines forgiven. So we have our work cut out for us, but we can still do it. Head over to our Circulation desk if you have fines and receive $2 off for every non-expired (dated July 2012 or after) food item. And if you'd just like to give, call the Circulation for a list of some high-demand items. This program is only good through March, so hurry in. Thank you!

Food for Fines starts March 1!

The Westland Public Library is teaming up with Gleaners Community Food Bank during Women's History Month to save you some money on your fines and help feed a whole lot of families and people in need. Just bring any non-perishable, unexpired (June 2012 sell by date) food item to the library during the month of March and receive $2 off existing fines (up to $20 total per account). In 2010, we held this event and received almost 2,000 food items and forgave almost $3,000 in fines. Let's see if we can top that this year! For a list of high-need items, please call the library (734-326-6123) or stop by any one of our service desks.

Cash and change donations accepted at the Circulation Desk, too (Gleaners is able to feed 3 meals for every $1 contributed), but fines cannot reduced because of these. Larger monetary donations can made online at www.gcfb.org or call 866-GLEANER.

Windows 7
Attention Public Computer Users!

We will be upgrading our public computers to Windows 7 and Office 2010 on February 27th and 28th.  Only half of the computers will be available to the public on both of those days, so long waitlists are expected.  Additonally there will be no time extensions available on those days.  All files that you made in Office 2007 will be fully compatible with Office 2010.

Role-Playing Game Event

Do you play Dungeons & Dragons or other role-playing games?

Game masters from Palladium Books of Westland will be here leading games of the fantasy/horror/sci-fi role-playing game Rifts and the Palladium Fantasy RPG. They'll have character sheets ready. Bring your own dice if possible (4-sided, 6-sided, and 20-sided). Even if you've never played a role-playing game before, that's okay! Sign up here if you'd like to attend. Pizza and pop provided.

What is role-playing? It's where you play a character and go on a journey led by a game master. You roll dice to determine your success in the game, either during combat or otherwise.

Ages 12-25.
