Join us for the Solar Eclipse!

On the afternoon of Monday, August 21, a solar eclipse will be visible across the United States. In Southeast Michigan, approximately 80% of the sun will be eclipsed. The library has two upcoming all-ages programs related to this rare astronomical event:

We have received a large number of requests for solar eclipse glasses and we are out of eclipse glasses except for a limited number that will be available at our solar eclipse-related programs on Thursday and Monday. If you are looking for eclipse glasses in advance, please check out this page for information about reputable vendors of eclipse glasses and other viewing equipment.

The Youth Department Teams Up With UNICEF Kid Power Bands

This summer the Westland Library youth department are teaming up with UNICEF Kid Power to make this year’s Summer Reading theme “Build a Better World” a reality!

The library ladies are dividing into three teams to compete in a friendly competition to see which team can reach the largest step goal between the start of Summer Reading on June 17th and the end of Summer Reading on July 29.

This year’s Summer Reading program strives to teach children to build a better world by respecting and helping others, taking care of the environment, constructing, and of course...reading. For each step taken while wearing the UNICEF Kid Power bands the ladies will help to unlock lifesaving food packets for kids in need around the world.Kids birth to age 12 can stop by the library to sign up for the Summer Reading program and watch the ladies’ progress!

The UNICEF Kid Power bands will be given as prizes at the end of the summer so that kids can continue the task of building a better world.

We are so excited to be part of UNICEF Kid Power!

Watch their progress on the "Westland Library Kids" Facebook page as well!
