Library Director

The William P. Faust Public Library of Westland Board of Trustees is seeking a full-time Library Director who will work collaboratively with the Board, employees, volunteers and community to provide superior library services to the Westland community. The Board of Trustees consists of five members appointed by the Westland Mayor and approved by the Westland City Council as provided in the Michigan City, Village and Township Libraries Act. The Library Director is responsible for the administration of the Library and is the executive officer of the Library.

The William P. Faust Public Library is a Class VI library with over 33,000 gross square feet. The library is located in southeastern Michigan’s Wayne County and serves a diverse population of about 85,000 residents. Westland is the 10th largest city in the state of Michigan and located halfway between Detroit and Ann Arbor Michigan. There are numerous cultural, educational, and recreational activities located within easy driving distance. The library has a dedicated library millage and total revenues of approximately 3.5 million dollars. The Library has a staff of 36, including 11 MLS staff. The staff is organized and has a collective bargaining agreement with the Library. The Library Director prepares and submits the library budget to the Board and advises the Board on policy matters

The position requires an MLS/MLIS from a graduate program accredited by the American Library Association and a permanent professional certificate (or the ability to obtain one) from the Library of Michigan. Additional qualifications include: at least 4 years of professional library experience in a public library, of which at least two years have been in a management or supervisory position; a thorough knowledge of public library service; proven experience in successful financial management and budgeting; an understanding of technology and its application in public libraries; strong management skills; excellent communication and interpersonal relationship skills; and the ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with many diverse groups. Experience with collective bargaining and millage campaigns are desirable.

Salary is commensurate with experience with a strong fringe benefit package, including 10% pension contribution, health, dental and vision insurance, paid time off for personal and vacation.
